Chapter 20

Ashley was very quiet on the way to their home. Jackie could see something had happened and once they were back to their place she prodded her.

“Ashley what happened? Is everything okay?”

Ashley told Jackie about what had happened and Jackie was mad at her.

”Ashley it’s wonderful to be loved and taken care of. Very rarely do we find that special someone who will love us no matter what. I told Jason how I felt about him and apparently he has been feeling the same about me too. It’s nice to know there is another person out there who would look out for me and worry about me. Why are you doing this to yourself? You deserve this more than anything and Sam, I really feel sorry for him. He seems to be a wonderful guy. I only wish you don’t regret your decision one day.”

“Jackie in all the homes that I have been, I’m sure they would have started their lives with “I love yous.” But that is not enough Jackie. I don’t want to give up my dreams to start a life with him and then later regret that I couldn’t be all that I wanted to be because of him. How many women I saw, cursed their marriage for the way they have ended up. I don’t want to be one of them. I want to get my degree, my job and nice place to live where no one will question me how I live my life. That’s the need I have right now.”

“Who said you have to give up all this to love someone? If Sam really loves you and you explain that these are the things you need to do, sure he will be supportive of you. These dreams of yours will give you more pleasure with him standing there besides you. You don’t have to shut him out like this.”

“Jackie believe me I’m doing this for him. He needs someone better. Someone who can give him what I can’t give. May be that’s my way of saying that I care about him. One day he would feel this wasn’t the right choice after all.”

“You are blind to not see his love for you. I feel sorry for him and I can’t seem to understand the logic behind any of your explanations.”

Jackie had never spoken to Ashley so angrily and this made Ashley sadder. She felt like everyone was blaming her for the mistake she never made.

Jackie turned around and asked “Ashley do you love him or not?”

Ashley hesitated for a while and said “No.”

“You are lying. I can see it in your eyes. But you are afraid to admit it to yourself.”

Later that night, Ashley lay on her bed with tears seeping through the corner of her eyes.

Ashley knew Sam would be very upset with her. She wanted to explain it to him more patiently and tell him that she needed some time at least. She felt confused.

There were times her heart said “Yes. I do love him.
